We have seen instances when a patients layout has lost all images (the layout still exists, however the individual images have now disappeared). This is generally caused by an AntiVirus program (or some other 3rd party program) clearing out the Windows %temp% directory. Windows 10 has become increasingly aggressive with the %temp% directory as well, causing the same issue. If a layout is open when the %temp% directory is cleaned, XrayVision will prompt to save the open layout when closing. As there are no longer images held within the %temp% directory, saving the layout will apply blank tiles to the layout.
There are a few recommendations that should be applied to reduce the risk of image loss, increase the odds of image recovery, and to eliminate the cause of this issue.
Recovery:
To increase the odds of image recovery, verify that a backup of the images is made. This can be done via a 3rd party backup solution, or using the Original Image safety settings. The Original Image safety settings can be applied by opening XrayVision and selecting Tools from the top menu.
Under Tools, select Options...
Click on the Safety tab within the options window, then set the Original Image / File Managing drop-down to Archive the original image so it may be recalled later.
Recovery of the images can be found within the patient folder, under Original Images folder.
Just copy the images within the Original Images folder with the correct Modified date back into the patient folder. Delete the files with the same name from the patient folder. Rename and remove the " Original" from the file name. Close and reopen XrayVision and pull up the layout again (thumbnail may still look incorrect). Open the restored layout and re-save, choosing to remove the read-only status if prompted. A valid thumbnail will be created and the layout has been restored.

Reduce Risk:
Reducing the risk of loss is best done by not automatically saving or discarding any images that prompt. If you get a Save Modified Image prompt, and nothing was done worth saving (no image adjustments, no reorganization, not an initial capture), do not save. If you have rotated, adjusted brightness or contrast, reorganized the layout, or have done any other image manipulation that you want to keep, then do click save.
Eliminate Issue:
Our most up-to-date and current software offering of XVWeb/XVCapture is not susceptible to this issue, as it uses the %programdata% directory instead of the more volatile %temp% directory for temporary storage. The biggest recommendation Apteryx has for avoiding this specific issue, is to contact the Imaging Sales department for further information regarding upgrade options and opportunities.
