Images can go missing for a multitude of reasons, which means the images may be found in a few different locations. The following guide will start with the most likely locations to find the missing images and will continue down to the less common locations. You can click the links immediately below to jump to a specific section.
Images in SafetyCache
Images Accidentally Cleared by 3rd Party Software
Images Cleared due to Out-of-date Software
Incorrect Patient Information
Images Under Wrong Patient
Images Taken Under "Nobody"
- Images in SafetyCache
- If XrayVision crashed during capture, the software should have stored the images in a location known as the SafetyCache. This SafetyCache will exist as a folder within the XrayVision installation location and will contain a folder named to match the local PC's specific hostname.
- Images Accidentally Cleared by 3rd Party Software
- If images in the SafetyCache are not stored, there is a chance that an AntiVirus or some other 3rd party software may eventually clear the SafetyCache folder. Images that have been cleared from the SafetyCache may be found in the Recycle Bin on the computer the SafetyCache is located. Most Recycle Bins are set to clear themselves out after 30 days, therefore if the missing images are older than 30 days, you can most likely skip this step.
- Images Cleared due to Out-of-date Software
- If using any version of XrayVision prior to v4.0.0.1 utilizing Windows 10 on any PC that interacts with XrayVision, images may be lost due to the incompatibility between the software and the operating system. Please reference the article Layout Missing Images - XrayVision 3 for specific information regarding the recommended resolution steps.
- Incorrect Patient Information
- If there is a change or update in the Practice Management software, a recent conversion, or a manual entry instead of bridging, there is a chance that patient information may have changed, been added, or input incorrectly (ID number, DOB, etcetera). This may have resulted in a duplicate patient containing the missing images. Searching for the patient within XrayVision by using less specific information may bring up the desired records:
- Click the Open Patient button, or select Patient > Open Patient
- Type in individual snippets of patient information (eg - First Name OR Last Name) and see if multiple instances of the same patient can be found
*Remember the possibility of misspelled patient information. - If multiple patient instances are found, please reference the article Merging Patients - XrayVision
- Click the Open Patient button, or select Patient > Open Patient

- Images Under Wrong Patient
- *Sometimes images are accidentally taken under the wrong patient. Finding these images can be the most tedious and time consuming. To make things as simple as possible, we suggest performing the following steps from a capture PC that will not be needed for a while, with the person who originally captured the images (as they may need to identify the images by sight).
To find images possibly taken under the incorrect patient, follow these steps:- Close all open patients by clicking Patients > Close All Patients
- Select Database > Database Utilities > Find Images by Date
- Select a date range which encompasses the date when the images where taken, then click the OK button
- Depending on the size of the database, the connection to the installation path from the local PC, and the date range selected, the software may take some time to populate results from the search. Once complete, a Found Images window will populate with a list of patients on the left (listing number of found images taken on that date).
- Left-clicking once on a patient will select that patient and will display the found images on the right.
- Left-clicking an image once will highlight an image.
- Left-clicking a highlighted image once will remove the highlight.
- Double-clicking any image will open that image and close the Found Images window (meaning the whole process will need restarted if that was not the correct image).
- If the missing image(s) are found, left-click to highlight the image(s) and click the Move To Another Patient button at the bottom of the window. This will bring up a list of patients, which will allow searching for the correct patient the images should be under. Once the correct patient is found within the list, left-click the patient name to highlight and click the OK button.

- Images Taken Under "Nobody"
- XrayVision, by default, allows for the capture of images without a patient being open, though warnings do populate (unless manually disabled). There is always a possibility that missing images were not actively captured under a patient, but were instead captured under "Nobody". Images captured under "Nobody" will prompt for a location to save the image when XrayVision is attempted to close, though this location is not a specific or consistent spot on every computer. Any image captured under "Nobody" that is not saved when prompted is irrecoverable. If this is a suspected issue, please reference our article Disable Image Capture Without Patient Association - XrayVision.
